Health Awareness and Promotions Programs

JourneySafe

The recent death of a two year old girl in a Rohnert Park crosswalk as a result of inattention by a teenage driver is the type of tragedy that the JourneySafe program works to prevent. JourneySafe is an outreach program established by Dr. David & Donna Sabet, parents of Jill Sabet. Jill and her boyfriend, Jonathan Schulte were two remarkable teens who lost their lives in a senseless single vehicle automobile crash.

They created the JourneySafe program, an educational outreach of the “Gillian Sabet Memorial Foundation” that utilizes the “Remember the 5 Tips” to survive. The primary goal of the JourneySafe program is to educate teens and parents about the unique risks faced by young drivers and their passengers.

More information can be found at the JourneySafe site.

Breast Cancer Awareness

In an effort to promote breast cancer awareness, this program provides information to Alliance members concerning the early detection of breast cancer.

Teddy Bears Project

In an effort to decrease the anxiety of undergoing a surgical procedure and assist in the child's recovery, stuffed teddy bears are distributed to children. This program was made possible with a grant from the California Medical Association Alliance Foundation.

Safe Schools Program

Since 2001, this program has offered mini-grant funds up to $1000 to Sonoma County schools to purchase materials, train staff, counselors, and students, and maintain existing programs that promote anti-violence and anti-bullying.  Programs include the Second Step program for students from kindergarten through 8th grade, Safe School Ambassadors for middle school and high school students, and more. The Safe Schools Program coordinates with the American Medical Association Alliance S.A.V.E. (Stop America's Violence Everywhere) program, an anti-violence program started in 1995 in response to violence in our schools.

Bullying: It's Not OK - read this article by the American Academy of Pediatrics

Funding for this program is received from the annual Garden Tour as well as private donations directed to this cause.  In cooperation with the Sonoma County Office of Education, we have been able to positively affect thousands of school aged children throughout the county.
