Funding Directive of Garden Tour 2011:


The Sonoma County Medical Association Alliance Foundation (SCMAAF) is proud to announce that this year’s proceeds from the 20th Annual Garden Tour were awarded to nonprofit organizations that work to improve the access to healthy foods and reverse obesity trends. Funding has been designated to the following six Sonoma County organizations for their programs that promote Healthy Eating, Healthy Living:

Community Action Partnership of Sonoma County

CAP logoTeen Nutrition Education Project
Pregnant and parenting teens at Nueva Vista, a continuation High School, and Sonoma Valley Teen Services, an afterschool program, attend nutrition education courses and cooking classes.

Land Paths

LandPaths logo Roseland Eats Healthy - Train Promotores de Salud, community members, to host classes for other community members about nutrition and exercise at Bayer Farm during the Summer Free Lunch program. These training sessions will coincide with garden-based activities for children and their Stories in the Garden program.

Food Bank logoGarden Based Nutrition Education - Eight week lessons integrating garden-based nutrition education activities at 16 lunch sites throughout Sonoma County. Children plant a salsa garden, learn about tomatoes and their nutritional qualities, make plant markers, learn how to correctly water and fertilize and make salsa using the Salsa Bike (a stationary bike with blender attached to the back wheel).

Health Club for Kids and Teens - Present classes organized into six week themes promoting healthy eating and active living in an engaging, age appropriate, comfortable setting to reverse the trends of obesity in youth at four sites (Roseland, Elsie Allen, Southwest, Vista).

logo Sunflower Garden Sprigs and Sprouts Program - Provide funding for field trips to the Sunflower Garden for children ages 4-11 from the 4C’s, the Santa Rosa Boys & Girls Club, and local daycare centers for hands-on learning about gardening and nutrition. The Sunflower Garden was created by four at-risk teens and serves to grow produce for the homeless.

logo Growing Healthy Kids at a Special Place - Provide an enhanced garden, food and walking program for children and families at A Special Place Therapeutic Preschool. Onsite therapists will address therapeutic issues related to food and healthy lifestyles for children that have been exposed to violence.

Foster Children's Give-Gift
Giving holiday gifts to more than 260 foster children and providing laptop computers to aged-out college-bound youth.

Health Awareness
Bringing the JourneySafe program addressing issues such as distracted driving to high school children.

Safe Schools
Bringing the JourneySafe program addressing issues such as distracted driving to high school children.

Health Careers Scholarships
Granting scholarships to Sonoma County students who are pursuing a medical or allied health career.
